ALVA – Northwestern Oklahoma State men's basketball had the home opener on Tuesday evening. The Rangers opened the game on a 19-4 run before heading to a 99-70 victory over the Barclay College Bears in the non-conference game.
The Rangers improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 at home.
Camron McDowell led all scorers with 31 points in the evening. Max Alexander was second with 21 points while adding 10 rebounds and nine assists with three steals earning the double double. Justin Norris was the third Ranger in double figures with 11 points.
Kabeya Tshibangu opened the games scoring with a layup assisted by Justin Norris after the opening tip-off. The Rangers scored the first four points of the game as Max Alexander followed with a shot. Barclay was as close as four points early before the Rangers went on an 11-0 run started by an Alexander layup. Alexander then forced a steal before picking up the assist on a McDowell fast break three pointer. DaRaun Clark hit the next three pointers as the Rangers hit three straight three pointers to take a 19-4 lead.
The Rangers continuing to push the pace extended the lead further as a Kabeya Tshibangu steal led to a fast break dunk by Alexander slamming home the two points for the 26-9 lead. Logan Phillips followed with a slam dunk off his own steal forcing another Barclay turnover. Justin Norris pushed the lead to 20 as the Rangers hit their sixth three pointer of the half.
Northwestern's lead hit 30 points after a Justin Norris three pointer after an offensive rebound Norris gained. The Rangers largest lead was 34 points in the half before Barclay went on a 8-0 run to get the Ranger lead back down to 50-25. The Bears were down 22 when Kyler Penco buried a three-pointer pushing the Rangers lead back to 27.
Northwestern went into the halftime break with a 26-point lead at 60-34.
Camron McDowell started the second half off with a steal and a fast break dunk with Alexander following with a steal and a fast break dunk pushing the lead back to 30 points. Will Ware hit his third three pointer of the evening.
The Rangers maintained the 30-point lead for the majority of the second half as after a small Barclay run the Rangers answered with a Tshibangue slam dunk followed by a McDowell layup for the 75-44 lead.
Barclay got as close as 21 points at 81-60 following a Hinton three pointer for his 19th point of the evening. McDowell was there to answer though with three of his 31 points as he drilled a three pointer to push the lead back to 21. The Rangers continued the run pushing it to 9-0 following a McDowell dunk.
Jake Lapisa then hit a three pointer for his first points of the game assisted by Kyler Penco as the Rangers went back in front 94-64. Jackson Feely hit a three pointer to give the Rangers a 99-70 lead as the Rangers closed out the 29-point victory in the home opener.
The Rangers will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 20, against Cameron University in Percefull Fieldhouse with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
