The Alva Goldbugs hosted the Newkirk Tigers last Thursday, Nov. 7, for the final game of the season. Although Alva coaches brought players off the bench for the final quarter, the Tigers were unable to score. The first quarter started off slowly with neither team able to score. At halftime, Alva led 14-0. The Goldbugs upped the score to 47-0 in the third quarter, which was the final score for the game.
With the win, the Goldbugs go into playoffs with a season record of 8-2 and a district record of 6-1. Tonight Alva will host Beggs in the first round of Class 2A-II playoffs. The Beggs Demons have an 8-2 record for the season and a 4-2 record in their district. The winner of the game continues to take on the winner of the Vian vs Kansas game next week while the loser is out of the running.
First Half Scoring
Neither team scored in the first quarter of last Thursday's game, but Alva was in good position to start the second quarter. At the Newkirk 18, Goldbug quarterback Cambell Gaisford found room along the right side, running in for the touchdown. The 18-yard TD ended a seven play, 88-yard drive. Kash Shipley kicked the extra point, and Alva led 7-0.
With a little over five minutes remaining in the half, the Goldbugs took over after a Tiger punt. At the Alva 19-yard line, Gaisford saw some space and took off, running 81 yards for the touchdown. Shipley's kick was good, and the Goldbugs led 14-0 at halftime.
Second Half Scoring.
The Goldbugs had possession of the ball to start the second half. They had great field position at the Newkirk 49. It took seven plays to advance to the Newkirk 26 despite a loss when Gaisford was sacked by Jake Spottedbear. At the 26, Gaisford again found a hole for his third rushing touchdown. Shipley's kick was good, and Alva led 21-0.
On Newkirk's second play of the half, Goldbug Wyatt Tucker broke through and stripped the ball from Tiger quarterback Breck Ailey taking it 17 yards for a touchdown. Shipley's kick missed the uprights, and Alva let 27-0.
Again, on Newkirk's second play, Shipley picked off a Tiger pass, giving the Goldbugs possession at the Newkirk 42. Despite some penalties, Alva advanced to the 14 yard line. From there, Lantz Mathers ran for the touchdown, finishing out a three-play 58-yard drive. Alva's point after attempt failed after a bad snap, but the Goldbugs led 33-0.
With 1:29 left on the third quarter clock, Newkirk had to punt. Shipley caught the ball and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown. Shipley's extra-point kick was good, and Alva led 40-0.
Newkirk took possession with a little over a minute left in the quarter. Ailey's pass on the first play was picked off by Mathers who took it 45 yards for a touchdown. The pick-6 increased Alva's lead to 46-0, and Shipley's kick added another point. Alva led 47-0 at the end of three quarters.
