Impatience

We live in an instant gratification society resulting in impatience.

While it is a curse, there is also a good side. When we rush through life, we miss out on the experiences that come from taking our time. Aging isn’t just for Whiskey anymore.

Experts agree, we should live in the moment, allowing us an appreciation for the journey and the small victories that come along the way. There are so many of us that don’t have the ability to wait. It is no wonder in a world where it is possible to get the answer to any question instantly with Google and to order coffee on the App, ready when you drive up. Why should any of us have to deal with delays and unknowns?

We discovered during the pandemic that even if something was available, it took time to get it. Michael Dugas a professor of psychology at the University of Quebec says, “We don’t have the opportunity to wait that we used to.” We have all discovered that our mood gets worse with every minute that we sit doing nothing. Like waiting for water to boil, watching it doesn’t speed up the process. We do things to make us more impatient like checking the phone and seeking reassurances from those around us.

He goes on to say that “Technology creates the illusion that certainty is possible, creating additional worry and anxiety.” Cultivate your patience by practicing meditation and thoughtfulness. In fact, the early bird that caught the worm caught an early worm.
