Winners abound at Kiowa Labor Day 5K race

With temperatures in the 60s and partly cloudy, it was an absolutely beautiful morning for Kiowa's Labor Day 5K race. Starting the race about 8:30 a.m., the runners and walkers who finished totaled 211.

South Barber Superintendent Dr. Mylo Miller was first to cross the finish line with a time of 18:56.7. Because he is 44 years old, Miller is considered the Overall Masters Male Finisher. When asked, Miller said he thinks he's won the 5K three times and second the last six years when Luis Chavez has entered and won. Chavez was not here this year.

Running just seconds behind Miller was Overall Male Finisher Newt Heatherman, who is a member of the cross-country team at Burlington, with a 19:07.

It's the same situation with the overall female winners. At age 41, Sarah Bickerstaff was the first female to cross the finish line in 20:13.2. Raised in Alva, Bickerstaff was known as a runner and did triathlons. She now resides in Omaha, Nebraska, where she works for Conagra Foods. Bickerstaff was the Overall Masters Female Finisher.

Bickerstaff also set a new record for the Overall Female Masters Division, replacing her old time of 20:14 set back in 2023 with a new time of 20:13.When asked if she trains, Bickerstaff said no because her busy schedule doesn't allow for it.

Alva's Lakin Gaddy is a cross-country runner for AHS, where she is a senior. She was the Overall Female Finisher, with a 21:43.2.
