Kiowa's Fall Fest first-ever Pie Eating Contest a sweet success
There were grown men and women and several youth with their face in a plate full of cherry pie trying to win Kiowa's Fall Fest first-ever cherry pie-eating contest.
Organizer Bayli Hyde did the countdown of 5-4-3-2-1. With no hands or utensils, contestants buried their faces in their individual pie and soon had red, cherry goo everywhere. A loud crowd surrounded the table full of contestants chanting words of encouragement. Some children, like little Piper Mostert, cheered specifically for her daddy Will to "eat that pie!"
It was South Barber freshman Joshua MacKinney who mastered the pie-eating contest and won first-prize. Joshua devoured most of his cherry pie, flipped the silver pie plate over with his mouth and finished polishing off the pie – crust crumbs and all! Second place finisher Kiowa man Jerrod Inman did the same and was just a few bites short of winning the contest himself.
Audrey Simpson, a South Barber fifth grader, was first place in the children's division. Marci Hyde said, "I liked how the younger kids observed the adult's techniques and then tried!"
MacKinney won $40 as the adult winner. Simpson won a $25 gift certificate to Sideline as the first place youth.
