Happy Fourth of July to everyone

Most towns are having celebrations all day. Dacoma will have the July 3rd evening show. There is plenty to do in Alva all day on the 4th, so get the kids out and have a great day.

I will probably spend the evening with Cleo and not travel to any celebrations. After 50 years of them, they all begin to look suspiciously alike. Anyhow, good luck and best wishes for a good time. Again, thanks to all that make the 4th of July special for the rest of us. Parents, please take a minute and explain to the young people the real importance of this day.

Tuesday at the Rialto Theatre the Alva Chamber of Commerce had a meeting called 2023 Member Round Table. I had seen the ad for it, but am not a member of the Chamber, so hadn't planned on attending. My friend Arden knows how much I love free food, so he suggested I come anyhow to eat and learn things. They were a bit short on participants. The food was really good. I don't brag on Kelly Parker too often, but he and Jesse Jones certainly have found their calling as hamburger and hot dog cookers. I couldn't hear very well, but the pamphlet I got made it clearer. The survey was about things the Chamber could help with, which I liked.

Back in time when my friend Pam Baltz was the manager the Chamber was so strapped for cash they spent most of their time hitting members up for money. When I asked a respected friend what he thought about the chamber back then he said a JFK saying came to mind. Ask not what your chamber can do for you; ask what you can do for your chamber. I get hit up enough for money, I didn't need the headache.

It does look like that has changed. There must be better times, because they have three employees compared to one in the good old days. Anyhow, they have done well without me being a member for 43 years, so good luck. Thanks to Jesse Jones for the meeting place and a free drink, and thanks to the Chamber for the free meal.

At an Eggs and Issues meeting Rep. Carl Newton talked about a bill that passed for improved 911 capabilities. I wonder why Woods County has to provide these services, and not the State of Oklahoma? He said it would save lives, which is good, but at a cost. Your 911 fee is going to raise 50 cents. I wonder if it is more about saving lives, or weaseling another 50 cents out of taxpayers? I'm sorry but with inflation killing me now, 50 cents is 50 cents. Point in fact. When the pandemic hit and for a long time after, Walmart steadily raised the price of my cat food. It went from just over $8 to $13.95, with them saying it was hard to get. After they got it raised $5+ all of a sudden it is no longer hard to get. Gallon jugs of water are up from 88 cents to $1.22. This is not just a Walmart thing, but the robbery should stop at some point.

Happy 4th! Let's all be safe out there, and God bless.
