When I was a young child, I was deathly afraid of the dark. Actually, today I will admit that I do not like dark places, so I guess you could say that I am still somewhat afraid of the dark. When I go into dark places today, I am way more cautious, and I prepare my mind to react in case the boogey man jumps out to grab me, lol!!!
There are many reasons that people, like me, are scared of the dark. Maybe it’s a fear of the unknown, maybe it’s simply because we cannot see clearly and are afraid of a misstep. Some say it’s even a psychological thing where we are aware that criminals use the dark to hide their misdeeds, and we are scared of being robbed or even worse, killed by the bad guys!
God uses the thought of darkness to help make us scared of evil. Evil things and evil men lurk in the darkness. John 3:19 says, “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.”
God, in the beginning, created light and separated it from darkness for our benefit. He did this not only to separate night from day, but to use it to teach us about good and evil. We need to be scared of the dark, not the darkness of the night, but the darkness of evil. God uses the difference of light and darkness to teach us why we should come to Him. Man, stumbles in the darkness, but sees clearly to walk in the light. Proverbs 4:19 says, “The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know over what they stumble.”
Darkness is defined as “the absence of light” and God uses the contrast of light and darkness to teach us that it is he who gives us the knowledge (light) to live eternally. John 8:12 says, “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
We no longer need to walk spiritually in fear of the dark, because Jesus, who is the light, has given us the knowledge to always walk in the light! We sing that old hymn that has these words, “When we walk with the Lord, in the light of his word”. This is a beautiful reminder that we need to be walking with Jesus every day!
We may still be a little afraid of the physical dark places in this world, but we should never fear spiritually dark places because God has given us His light through Jesus Christ. As long as we continue to walk in that light, we shall have no fear! I John 1:7 says, “7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
I just want to encourage the reader to stand unafraid of the evil one, because God has sent His light into the world to shine that light into the darkness to expose the darkness for what it really is, and that is evil. Stay strong and unafraid brothers and sisters!
