Lady Rangers win second straight to start the season

ALVA, Okla. – The Lady Rangers continued their play Tuesday at home against Friends University, another non-conference team. Northwestern strung together a 5-0 run in the first and an 8-0 run in the second for a hefty lead the entire game before winning by 34 points over Friends.

Faith Simpson and Nikya Orange set the pace on offense for the Rangers with 13 points each followed closely with 12 from Carly Craig. Camille Thomas led defensively with 8 rebounds. Talayah Thomas collected 5 assists.

First Quarter

Talayah Thomas opened up scoring for the Lady Rangers with a corner three pointer and layup to push her team into an early lead. Friends University responded with back to back made free throws to trail 5-2. The Northwestern drought was broken by Faith Simpson with a fast break basket. Off the bench, Nikya Orange contributed a layup from the post to further the Ranger lead 9-4. The Falcons countered with a three point play and two free throws to close the gap. Josena Frame sank a corner three pointer to continue Northwestern's lead at the end of the first 14-9.

Second Quarter

Camille Thomas fired off a contested layup and a free throw under the basket to keep the momentum with Northwestern. C. Thomas sank two more free throws to allow her team to advance to a double digit lead at 19-9. Off the bench, Paige Scott fired off a three pointer. The Falcons answered back with a layup. On a one on one, T. Thomas finished a layup to extend the Lady Ranger lead to 26-11. Orange contributed a layup. Friends fired back with another three point play and a free throw. Simpson fired off another layup to double the Falcons score and advance the Lady Ranger lead 30-15. Friends sank a deep three pointer to close the gap 32-18 at half time.

Third Quarter

Out of the halftime break, Simpson picked up another layup with a steal and fast break. Friends fired back with a layup. Carly Craig sank a three pointer to further the Lady Ranger lead 37-20. Off the bench, Orange contributed a reverse layup and jumper. Simpson banked in another basket from the post. T. Thomas sank a corner three to push Northwestern ahead by twenty, 46-24. Craig fed off the upward momentum and contributed another three-pointer. The Falcons fought back with back to back three pointers to trail 53-32 going into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

Craig opened up the fourth quarter on fire with back to back three pointers. Scott fired off another corner three to extend the Lady Ranger lead to thirty at 62-32. Off the bench, Orange contributed a hook shot and fast break layup. The Falcons countered with a layup and three-pointer. Tyauna Vaught contributed an offensive rebound and put back to continue Northwestern's lead 69-39. Anna Motycka sank back to back sets of free throws to assist Northwestern in clinching their second win of the season 73-39.

The Lady Rangers will continue their home-stand facing off against Kansas Christian College for another non-conference game. Tip off for Northwestern is set for Monday, Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m.
