Rangers open season with win over the Aggies

ALVA, Okla. – The Lady Rangers opened their season at home Tuesday, Nov. 15, against Oklahoma Panhandle State University and won 60-46. An 11-0 run from Northwestern in the second quarter allowed the Lady Rangers to gain control.

Camille Thomas led the team with 17 points followed by Faith Simpson with 14. Thomas also led in rebounds with 10 followed once again by Simpson with 7. Carly Craig led in assists with 8. C. Thomas picked up her first double-double for the season.

First Quarter

Freshman Talayah Thomas opened up scoring for the Lady Rangers with a layup. The Aggies quickly responded with a layup and jump shot to take an early lead. Transfer Faith Simpson answered back for Northwestern with six consecutive points. Panhandle State fired off a fast break layup. Another made basket from Simpson allowed the Lady Rangers to lead 10-9 half way through the quarter. The Aggies fought back with a jump shot and two free throws. T. Thomas quickly responded by sinking a three pointer from the top of the key and Simpson contributed another floater for the Lady Rangers. A contested layup from Camille Thomas and floater from Nikya Orange put Northwestern ahead by three, 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The Aggies jumped ahead with back to back three pointers from the top of the key to start the second. Carly Craig contributed a free throw to leave the Lady Rangers trailing 22-20. Off the bench, Chrissen Harland sank a three to retake the lead. C. Thomas contributed a floater and layup to propel Northwestern forward 27-22. Orange and Simpson made back to back layups to further the Lady Ranger lead. The Aggies responded with back to back free throws. A jump shot from C. Thomas allowed Northwestern to carry their lead into the second half of the game 33-25.

Third Quarter

Oklahoma Panhandle drew first blood at the start of the second half with a layup. Josena Frame quickly answered with a corner three. Orange contributed a Euro step layup to advance the Lady Ranger lead to double digits 38-27. Craig sank a three pointer from the top of the key. The Aggies countered with a three pointer and back to back layups to close the gap. Northwestern held onto their double digit lead with two free throws from C. Thomas at 44-34. Oklahoma Panhandle responded with a jumper. Once again, C. Thomas fired off back to back free throws to keep the Lady Rangers ahead 46-38 going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

A beautiful assist from Craig and a layup from C. Thomas extended Northwestern's lead to start the fourth. C. Thomas continued her forward momentum with a three-point play to propel the Lady Rangers ahead 51-38. The Aggies answered back with a jumper to close the gap to ten points. Craig quickly responded with back to back layups for Northwestern. T. Thomas contributed a free throw. C. Craig sank back to back free throws to allow the Lady Rangers to clinch their first victory 60-46.

Northwestern was to host Friends University on Saturday afternoon.
