MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Northwestern Oklahoma State opened the season on the road Thursday following a 45-minute weather delay. The Muleriders took advantage of a strong opening first half with 21 points before closing out a 62-31 victory.
After a strong defensive first quarter the Muleriders were able to strike first with a 22 yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the quarter with 1:44 left. Southern Arkansas remained with a 7-0 lead through the first.
The second quarter was the opposite as a lot of scoring took place. Northwestern got down to the Muleriders five before the defense stopped the Rangers with a turnover on downs on the Mulerider five. Northwestern's defense took advantage of the field position though forcing Southern Arkansas to a three and out before forcing a safety as the Rangers trailed 7-2.
Northwestern kept all momentum for the start of the quarter following the safety as on the pursuing position Clarkson closed the drive out with a 39 yard touchdown run to give the Ranges their first lead of the season at 9-7.
Southern Arkansas answered back with an 18 yard touchdown run by Scales to regain the lead at 14-9. The Muleriders scored the final 14 points of the half to carry a 21-9 lead into the break.
Clarkson led the Rangers at halftime with 99 rushing yards including a rushing touchdown. Braden Waters led the Rangers in tackles with four.
The Muleriders carried their momentum into the second half with 41 points in the half to beat the Rangers 62-31.
