RUSSELVILLE, Ark. – In Northwestern's second game of the two game road trip in Arkansas, The Rangers completed the Arkansas sweep building off their Thursday night thrilling victory.
Northwestern started off the game strong with a 9-0 run followed by a second half 15-0 run the Rangers used to control the game.
The Rangers advance to 11-6 on the season with a 6-5 conference record while Arkansas Tech falls with a 2-8 conference record and a 5-8 season record.
Larry White led The Rangers with 20 points followed closely by Parsons with 18 and Free with 16. Bubba Furlong and White both contributed 7 rebounds to lead the way for the Rangers on the glass. White added an additional 6 steals to The Ranger victory helping force 14 turnovers.
First Half
The Rangers built off their win Thursday night by starting off with a strong 9-0 run. Larry White and Bubba Furlong both fired off three pointers. A steal by Anthony Jones allowed teammate Malik Parsons to contribute a three-point play to the run. The Wonder Boys slowly responded with a dunk after three minutes of play. Defensive rebounds by Brian Free and Furlong carried the Rangers into the first media timeout with a 9-2 lead.
Out of the timeout Anthony Jones made two foul shots and Free contributed a layup. The Wonder Boys, having had enough, fired back by going on a 11-0 run to gain their first lead of the game. Two made jumpers by Parsons and Free ended the run pushing Northwestern back in front. A defensive rebound by Ravel Moody followed by a layup by Chance Love tied the game at 19-19 half way through the half.
The Wonder Boys quickly regained the lead with a made three-point shot. Moody responded with a dunk. Two back-to-back made shots by the Wonder Boys allowed them to stay in the lead at 27-21 going into the third media timeout. Free kept the Rangers in the game by sinking a corner three-pointer. A made free throw by White left The Rangers trailing by six 31-25 with five minutes remaining. After the last media timeout the Wonder Boys scored first with a three point jumper. The Rangers quickly responded with a layup and jumper by Love to start the Ranger run. Love contributed another two free throws to bring the score to 34-31 with a minute remaining in the half. A steal and layup from White would tie the game at 34-34 right before the halftime buzzer sounded as going into halftime the game was tied. Love led The Rangers with eight points followed by White and Free with seven. Parsons led the team with four rebounds.
Second Half
The Rangers struck first after halftime on a layup by Parsons. A three pointer by Free and layup by Love quickly put the Rangers in the lead 41-37. Parsons contributed to the lead with another made layup.
The Rangers continued to thrive, going on a 15-0 run bringing the score to 56-37. Northwestern took control of the game from the run with a 17-2 run in total. The Wonder Boys broke the run with a three pointer right after the second media timeout. White quickly responded with a defensive rebound and a three pointer. Another three point play by Parsons extended The Ranger lead to 62-46 at the under eight timeout. Eric Hancik off the bench continued to keep pace for the Rangers adding two free throws. The Rangers used their defense throughout the half leading to offensive chances as Northwestern forced 14 turnovers throughout the game.
The Wonder Boys fired back with another three-pointer as they tried to get back in the game but Love responded with a layup following his own miss. Following the third media timeout, White fed off the upward momentum of The Rangers with another three. With five minutes of play left Jones added another jumper bringing the lead to 73-58. Furlong sunk a three pointer leading into the final media timeout to give the Rangers their largest lead of the game at 20 points. After resuming play, Parsons had a steal and a dunk. A layup and free throw by Furlong secured the Northwestern Ranger victory over the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech 83-67. The Rangers used good ball control throughout the game as Northwestern turned the ball over only four times in this game.
The Rangers were to face off against the University of Arkansas Monticello Weevils at home Thursday.
