Daniel, Hosea, Joel and Amos are the books of the Old Testament we will read this week. These are all prophets of God, speaking truth to the Israelites and in some cases other nations.
Each book is a little different. Daniel interprets his own dreams and those of the king. Hosea is told to marry a certain type of woman to create a visual of his prophecy. Joel is more like other prophets we have read, warning of destruction and a call for repentance. Amos was a sheep breeder who became a prophet.
Daniel is best known for being in the lion’s den, and for his friends being thrown into the fiery furnace. Daniel also has a beautiful prayer on behalf of Israel. He begins, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments.”
Hosea calls for Israel to return to obedience. He writes “For the ways of the Lord are right, the righteous walk in them.” Joel writes of destruction and redemption to come, “So you shall know that I am the Lord your God.”
The prophecies of Amos begin with “Thus says the Lord,” and “Hear this word that the Lord has spoken,” and “Thus the Lord God showed me.” Amos spoke the truth to Israel, God wants His people to be faithful and obedient, then as now. He wants to be the Lord our God.
