Elsie Mae Shipley, daughter of Otto and Irene Golbek, was born near Avard on April 17, 1935. She stepped into the arms of Jesus on October 26, 2021, at the age of 86 years.
As a child, Elsie loved living on the farm and helping with the milking and plowing. She met the love of her life, Marvin, at the age of 15. They were married on April 19, 1952. Marvin and Elsie had three children, Connie, Brenda, and Larry.
As a family they loved going fishing and camping. Every summer they went to Anthony, Kansas, to the horse races and greyhound races. Elsie and Marvin had many wonderful vacations, including a trip to Yellowstone, a cruise to the Bahamas and a cruise tour to Alaska. Some of their favorite trips were to Red River, New Mexico with their besties, Jim and Judy Stewart. Juanita Campbell and Larry and Margaret Snow sometimes rounded out this rowdy group.
Elsie was never afraid of hard work, having waited tables, cleaned houses, baby sat, worked at Frederick's Studio, and worked 25-plus years at Central National Bank. She loved her customers and they loved her. One of her proudest accomplishments was when she completed her GED studies.
Elsie loved the Lord with all her heart and served with Marvin at the Bible Baptist Church for over 45 years. "Miss Elsie," as all the kids knew her, taught 3-4 year olds Sunday School for over 35 years, leading many young children to the Lord. Elsie loved all of God's creations, but she really excelled in tending to her flowers.
Elsie was also well known for her delicious chicken and noodles that she made for the youth group dinners at auctions and also she delivered them to friends in need.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Floyd Golbek; two sisters, Mary and husband, Clarence Haltom and Ruth and husband, Pete Nutter.
Elsie leaves behind her loving husband of 69 plus years, Marvin; daughters Connie and husband. Jerry Liles of Lawton, Brenda and husband, Doug Brady of Alva; one son, Larry and wife, Shannon Shipley, of Alva.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kimberly (Andrew) Turnipseed, Jeremy (Monica) Liles, Mandy (Brad) Bowles, Matt (Jade) Brady, Tisha (Heath Nickel) Shipley, and Levi (Chelsey) Shipley. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Lois Golbek; sister-in-law, Sue Morgan; and brother-in-law Price Shipley; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
Her story would not be complete without mentioning her beloved girlfriends, "The Golden Girls," consisting of Margaret Snow, Gail Wilkes, Beverly Turner, and Arlene Hada; her special cousin, Betty Riggins; other relatives and friends.
