Constitution Day at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is Monday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. in the Student Center Ranger Room. Admission is free and open to all.
The program, sponsored by the Social Sciences Department and the Northwestern Institute for Citizenship Studies, is titled “Secession and the U.S. Constitution.” This year’s observance will involve an examination of the issue in the broader context of contemporary global trends.
“Though opposed to any secession movements in the United States, Dr. Aaron Mason, professor of political science, and I thought it would be timely from an academic standpoint to discuss how the U.S. Constitution regards such sentiments and tendencies,” Dr. Eric Schmaltz, chair of the department of social sciences, said. “Moreover, many longstanding separatist movements have resurfaced worldwide in more recent decades, partly feeding off of the globalization process, a sort of paradoxical development. We can also briefly consider the American case within this larger historical framework.”
