Grow and Share OHCE April meeting

Grow and Share OHCE met for its regular meeting at 6 p.m. on April 13 in the home of Mary Hamilton. Carol McDaniel served as hostess. President Janet Cunningham called the meeting to order. All present recited the flag salute. McDaniel gave a devotional from Psalm 91. Eight members present answered roll call to “Name your favorite houseplant or succulent.”

Minutes for the March meeting were read. Amanda moved that the minutes be approved as read. Motion passed. Jean gave the treasurer's report stating a balance of $607.15. Jean also communicated that she had received thank you notes from the Northwestern Foundation for scholarship donations.

Under the Cultural Enrichment Committee, Cunningham reported that the challenge for county OHCE members to write their own Covid stories had been issued to Achievement Night. Cunningham gave a short mini-lesson on how the 1918 Spanish Flu affected the university. Her information came from “Northwestern Oklahoma State University: A Centennial History,” by Wayne Lane.

There was no unfinished business.

New business included a report from Cunningham and McDaniel on the West District virtual meeting held on March 26. They reported on meeting topics and also craft workshops attended. Cunningham announced that McDaniel won the Member of the Year Award for the West District and will now compete at the state level.

Cunningham brought examples of the Christmas ornaments and the Mandola project that she completed during the workshops. McDaniel will have a mini-lesson in the future on the ornament.

Also under new business the group discussed OHCE Week. It was decided to have the regular May meeting during OHCE Week on May 6 at 6 p.m., in conjunction with a cookout to be held at the home of Cunningham.

The final item of new business brought forward was a donation to the Lela O'Neil Scholarship. The group decided to donate $25 to this scholarship.

It was announced that at Achievement Night, Grow and Share won the following awards: Achievement Points – 1st Place; Secretary's Book – 1st Place; Woods County Member of the Year – Carol McDaniel.

Volunteers were encouraged to attend the next leader's lesson on “Nurturing Your Emotional Health” on April 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the courthouse conference room. There is also a workshop scheduled on April 17 at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds on Breakfast and Brunch Ideas, Crepes and Scone Making 101. May 3 will be Woods County Spring Council.

Mary Hamilton gave a lesson on houseplants and succulents. She also gave an informative mini-lesson on raised beds. McDaniel served various pies for dessert and secret pal gifts were exchanged.

The meeting adjourned to the May regular/OHCE Week meeting to be held on May 6 at 6 p.m. at Cunningham's home.
