One short year ago, all of the focus was on the 2020 Barber County Fair: it was to be the fair's 100th anniversary. Plans were being developed to make it the best ever. But then plans had to change.
In May, the Barber County Fair Board voted to host the 4-H and FFA Showcase in 2020. This removed the open class divisions, but allowed for a chance for 4-H and FFA members to show off their hard work.
Based on recommendations from the Barber County Health Department, the CDC, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas State University, plans have been made to try and protect the exhibitors, judges and spectators.
On Friday, July 17, the Fashion Revue Judging was held. Video of each outfit was recorded and will be assembled together and shared on Facebook and http://www.Barber.ksu.edu to show off the hard work.
On Wednesday, July 22, all of the exhibits traditionally inside the 4-H building will be judged. This judging is not open to the public and is scheduled to reduce the number of people in the building at any one time. Three people will be taking photos of exhibits so a video can be produced to highlight the projects of our 4-H members.
On Thursday, July 23, the Horse Show will take place in the fairgrounds arena starting at 7 p.m. This is open to the public. The traditional hamburger dinner was canceled this year.
On Friday, July 24, the swine, sheep, goats and bucket calves take over the fairgrounds. The swine show will start at 9 a.m., followed by the bucket calves at 11 a.m. and then the sheep and goats at noon.
On Saturday, July 25, the beef will be the main event. The beef show starts at 2 p.m. with the Futurity Classes, Breeding Heifers, Market Steers, and Dairy Cattle. In the morning, 4-H and FFA members from around the county can put their smarts to the challenge in the Livestock Quiz Bowl. This will start at 10 a.m. at the fairgrounds.
The fairgrounds will look very different this year as the 4-H building, open class building and merchants building will be empty of exhibits and participants. The kitchen is not opening, but there will be a food truck on the grounds.
Sunday will be a jam packed afternoon in the Hardtner Gym. Starting at 2 p.m. a devotion will replace church. Following is an awards presentation to highlight the champions and grand champions from the fashion show, building exhibits and horse show. Next, the senior scholarships will be awarded followed by a short break for the Watermelon Feed sponsored by Barber County Farm Bureau. Around 3 p.m. the premium sale will start with a picture of the animal to be sold followed by the 4-H or FFA member answering a couple of questions about their project just prior to the auction.
In addition to the 4-H and FFA events, the rodeo committee has made plans for two nights of rodeo entertainment. Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, the rodeo promises plenty of excitement. Lane Haas will be in concert Friday night and Cynthia Rausch Band will take the stage on Saturday night. The opening act will be Gus Burns. If you are interested in advance tickets to the rodeo and concerts, the Barber County Royalty contestants are actively selling tickets.
