This coming Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m., South Barber High School in Kiowa, Kansas, will set school history with a non-traditional graduation. This is a culmination of a year that has wrecked the traditional spring semester of the Class of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic that has essentially closed down the U.S. economy and life as Americans know it for the last two and a half months. School buildings across the nation were closed in an effort to stop spread of the highly contagious virus. This meant no prom, no track or tennis, no spring music programs, no activities and possibly no awards presentation or graduation ceremony.
Because of the innovation of many, the SB Class of 2020 will have a graduation ceremony and parade at 2 p.m. The event will be downtown on Main Street and will certainly meet the social distancing requirement of the pandemic.
There will be a graduation stage set up in front of the SCTELCOM building at 7th and Main, across from the Corner Stop convenience store.
The graduates and their parents will ride in golf carts and parking will be marked for them beside the stage. Superintendent Dr. Mylo Miller explained the graduates will stand on the back of the golf cart with their parents (or the person the graduate designates) driving as they parade up and own the street.
Those people there to watch are to stay in their cars and park on Main Street between 5th and 7th streets. It's suggested they back their vehicle into the parking space and be facing Main Street so they can see better.
There will be a Facebook live feed and 97.5 The Quake will be broadcasting from the podium. That way everyone can view and hear the parade and stage presentations.
In case of inclement weather the graduates will parade on Main Street in vehicles and the ceremony will be in the South Barber Auditorium, and can be watched on Facebook Live and heard on 97.5 The Quake.
Last Friday night at the SB Chieftain Football Field, the school held the second "Be The Light" ceremony at 8:20 p.m. After the scoreboard clock reached 20:20 the football field lights were turned off and car headlights remained on. The lights illuminated a special drone flyover, by Luke MacKinney, that flew over the field to record the symbol of support for the 2020 seniors.
