Lady Rangers return home with a win

ALVA Okla. – The Lady Rangers bounced back in tremendous fashion Thursday evening winning 68-51 over Arkansas-Monticello. The Red and Black used a strong second quarter to take control of the game, and never let go of the momentum to help carry the team to victory.

Northwestern turned in a balanced attack having four different players reach double digits in Kalea King with 17, Presley Payahsape finishes with 15, Kenzi Lamer 13, and Bailey Brown finishes the game with 12 points. Kyleigh Leverich led the Lady Rangers with seven rebounds, followed by King and Brown with six each. Leverich and King led the team in assists, finishing with six apiece.

The game was even at 24 with four minutes left in the second quarter before the Lady Rangers took over the game. They would finish the quarter on a 13-5 lead to take an eight-point game and would never trail in the game again.

Northwestern would finish with 14 points in the paint compared to 32 for Monticello, the Lady Rangers scored six second chance points to UAM's 14. Northwestern was able to control the glass winning 37-31 and were even 12-12 on offensive rebounds on the night. Northwestern was able to force 20 turnovers, while giving the ball up 19.

The Blossoms got the game rolling with two points from Berniezha Tidwell. Monticello would get the first six points of the game and held the Lady Rangers scoreless for the first four minutes of the game before King was able to knock down a free throw. Rangers would score even the score on back to back three pointers from Hillary Hurst and the first quarter would end with an even score of 11-11. Monticello shot 5-14 for 35% in the quarter compared to Northwestern's 4-13 for 30%

The first five minutes of the quarter went back and forth and could not have been more even as the teams traded baskets which led to 19-19 halfway through the quarter. Brown's layup evened the game up at 24, starting a run that would close the half with a 15-5 run giving the Lady Rangers the eight-point lead at halftime. The Lady Rangers won the quarter 26-18 from shooting 9-17 including knocking down six three pointers in the second quarter. The Lady Ranger defense forced them to 1-7 from the beyond the arc helping create some separation.

The Lady Rangers led 37-29 at the break over the Blossoms.

Red-and-Black started right where they ended the second quarter by starting the second half on a 10-2 run in the quarter to help open up their first double digit lead of the night. The run brought the score to 47-31. The Blossoms would try and fight their way back into the game closing the gap to 10 to close the quarter from a 7-1 run. Both teams would struggle in the quarter shooting a combined 6-19 with only 20 points with Northwestern winning the quarter 11-9.

The Red-and-Black would not allow the comeback bid any longer however opening the fourth with a 13-1 run the bring the lead to over 20 points. Brown opened the quarter with the first seven points between the teams. The largest lead would be 63-41 halfway through the fourth quarter. Leverich would put the final touches of the game from the final line giving the Lady Rangers their victory of 17-point margin.

Northwestern beats Arkansas- Monticello 68-51 Thursday night in Percefull Fieldhouse.

The Lady Rangers would finish the game 21-51 for 42% from the field, 12-of-31 from three, and 14-21 from the foul line. Held the Blossoms to 20-54 shooting and only 3-18 from behind the arc for 16% in the game. The game had three lead changes along with five ties.

The win brings the Red-and-Black to 10-9 on the year with 6-7 in Great American Conference play. Northwestern now sits only one game back of the final playoff spot.
