Alva Masons hold breakfast for students

I was glad to read the article in the Alva Review-Courier: "Masonic Pancake Benefit for AHS" (Nov 15 issue). It is great that the Masons (of which I am a fifth-generation member) are holding a benefit breakfast in which proceeds will help fund Alva students to take a trip to Washington, D.C., to tangibly learn about our nation's history up close and personal. I applaud that.

My connections to Alva run deep and, by coincidence, my own school principal in Kansas (where I grew up) was "Mister Mike Zakoura,” as students called him, but his father was the late Victor C. Zakoura, whom I knew also. I would talk to my friend Vic Zakoura, and he told me he was initiated into the Alva Masonic Lodge in the year 1934 ... some 85 years ago! This underscores how 'education' is vital, and I applaud my fellow Masonic fraternal brothers for continuing to help the Alva community.

Sincerely,

James A. Marples

Longview, Texas (with connections to Alva)
