SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist put together a spirited effort but came up short losing 82-78 to Southern Nazarene in a women's basketball game Thursday night in Bethany.
The loss dropped OBU to 10-13 overall and 6-11 in the Great American Conference. The Lady Bison remained tied for the seventh-place with Northwestern Oklahoma in the league standings. The top eight teams qualify for the conference championship tournament next month in Bartlesville.
Victoria Blankenship and Autumn Avina each had 20 points for the Lady Bison and kept them close throughout. Additional scoring was provided by Charissa Price with 16 and Katy Custer with 14.
OBU trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the third before beginning to fight its way back. Avina's jumper with 1:09 to play cut SNU's lead to 76-73. However, SNU hit four-of-five free throws down the stretch to keep their cushion safe.
OBU finished the game making 26-of-62 (42%) from the field but were only six-of-22 (27%) from three-point distance. The Lady Bison won the rebounding batting 38-34 with Blankenship leading all players with 13. It was her ninth double-double of the season, a GAC best.
