Alva Ladybugs lose road game to Woodward, 57-37

At their last meeting for Alva’s homecoming Jan. 28, the Alva Ladybugs dominated the boards against Woodward and came away with a last second win 50-49. Tuesday’s meeting was entirely different. The Class 3A Ladybugs traveled to Woodward and lost to the 5A Lady Boomers 57-37.

The Alva team kept the score close in the first half with Woodward leading 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. By half time, the Woodward lead was cut to two at 23-21.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Woodward scored seven points before Alva could answer. The Ladybugs managed to narrow the lead to 30-28 at one point, but Woodward soon pulled ahead. The score was 42-31 at the end of the third period and 57-37 as the final buzzer sounded. When the Boomer victory was assured, both teams emptied their benches to give younger players some time on the court.

Rebounding was a crucial factor in the game. Woodward secured 26 offensive rebounds and took a lot more shots at the basket than the Alva team.

In scoring, Payton Jones was the only Ladybug in double figures with 21 points. Stephanie Spellman had 6, Acacia Charles 4, Chloe Durkee 3 and Jazmia Walker 1.

Woodward’s scoring was led by Masey Porter with 14, Kami Porter 13, Jordyn Wadley 9, Payton Rowley 6, Makale Floyd 5, and Kirstyn Hine 5.

The Alva Ladybugs finish regular reason play with an 11-12 record.

Friday night, the Ladybugs begin playoffs at 6:30 p.m. at Prague against the Red Devils. Both teams will move on to regionals on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Chisholm High School. The loser will play at 1:30 p.m. against the loser of the Chisholm vs. Blackwell game. The winner plays at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of the Chisholm and Blackwell matchup.
