Bechtel Wins Houston Classic; Leads SNU Golf to Second Place Finish

HUMBLE, Texas - Rhett Bechtel shot a three-round score of 217 (+1) including a 68 (-4) on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Southern Nazarene golf team to a three-round team score of 913 (+49) to place second at the Houston Classic at the Golf Club of Houston.

Oklahoma City won the event with a three-round score of 889 (+25) while the Crimson Storm followed in second place. Wayland Baptist placed third at 920 (+56) while St. Thomas (TX) was fourth at 926 (+62). Midland rounded out the top five (+81) while Southwestern College (+98) and Southwestern Christian (+102) rounded the team scores.

Bechtel was terrific all week beginning on Sunday, where he shot a 74 (+2) and a 75 (+5) before sailing up the leaderboard with the only sub-70 score of the week with a 68 (-4) on Monday. Bechtel held off Jack Madden by one stroke to take home the individual title.

Bechtel led the event in Par 5 scoring at -5 and birdies with 10 total during the three day event. Bechtel was also -1 in Par 3 scoring and +4 in Par 4 scoring, both top three finishes in the event.

Dylan Igo placed ninth after opening the round with a 72 (E) before carding back-to-back 77s (+5) for a three-round score of 226 (+10). JD Pitts placed 13th with a three round score of 230 (+14) including a 74 (+2) in the final round.

Igo was tied with Bechtel in Par 5 scoring at -2 and was second in Pars with 35.

Rounding out the team scorers for SNU was Ondrej Melichar with a three-round score of 240 (+24) and Will Coffman who finished with a three-round score of 247 (+31).

Hayden Peek competed as an individual for SNU and finished with a three-round score of 245 (+29).

SNU returns to action on Monday, March 11, 2019 as they will compete in The Arkansas Collegiate in El Dorado, Ark.
