Evelyn Hofen hosted the monthly meeting of the Tulip Garden Club in her home on Nov. 14, 2018. Her tables overflowed with the warmth of fall accentuated with brown tableware, pumpkins and candles. Hofen's buffet featured Asian dumpling stew, curried rice, beef with onions and chives served on lettuce, cranberry orange bread, and cookies. Beverages were orange spice tea, coffee, hot chocolate and water. Members were given small pumpkins or scarecrows for their favors. Members present were Li Brooks, Mary Ann Crow, Genevieve Farris, Evelyn Hofen, Helen Janzen, Linda McCoy, Donna Rhodes and April Ridgway.
McCoy, president, called the meeting to order with members reading the the Collect. Members responded to the roll call by telling if they had made a hypertufa project. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Ridgway, secretary, and approved. In Rhonda Fields' absence, McCoy gave the treasurer’s report.
McCoy began the meeting by reading a thank-you note from Shannon Vore for the donation to her classroom as part of the club’s Adopt a Classroom project.
Due to scheduling conflicts, the Northwest District Fall Board meeting was canceled and the club presidents submitted their reports to McCoy. In lieu of a meeting of the Alva Garden Council in November, McCoy talked to Suzie Koontz about the upcoming spring district convention and the need for a nominating committee to select new district and council officers for the next term. Installation of the local officers will be hosted by the Tulip Club in the spring.
McCoy attended the Heritage Hills Historic Home Tour on Oct. 13-14 in Oklahoma City and will report on her impressions of the tour at the January meeting.
The Oklahoma Garden Club state board meeting was canceled due to bad weather, but McCoy informed the group about the current state issues, including registration for the state and south central conventions, poster contests, flower show schedules and costs. The topic of the theme baskets that each district is to prepare for the convention was discussed. The group favored a basket including an Instapot and cooking items.
The group moved on to plan the reception for the 70th anniversary of the Tulip Club. Displays and refreshments were planned along with a time for the club members to meet to set up at the Runnymede.
In committee reports, Hofen volunteered to deliver the food items collected by the club to the food bank. The gardens surrounding the pyramid looked much better following the fall cleanup. A crepe myrtle has been purchased to fill one of the corners and will be planted when the weather is favorable.
In new business, the club planned for the annual Christmas party to be held on Dec. 13, at the home of Andrew and Donna Rhodes. Members volunteered to bring various food items and were reminded to bring their Petal Pal gift, a Dirty Santa gift and a toy for the Toys for Tots program.
Hofen gave a lesson on hypertufa, the creation of weather-hardy garden containers and yard ornaments using a mixture of concrete, pearlite, peat moss and water. She showed inspirational pictures and read informative articles to inspire club members so that they could begin to plan what items they wanted to construct at the April meeting.
Mary Ann Crow won the hostess gift, a beautiful metallic pumpkin centerpiece.
December’s meeting will be at Donna Rhodes’s home at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, and each member needs to bring her Petal Pal gift, a Dirty Santa gift, and a toy for the Toys for Tots program.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
