We need a hero

Psalm 34:18 (NLT): “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

I received a disheartening phone call this week from someone very important to me. She was in a very dark place; lower than I’ve ever seen from her. She is normally a very strong person, but she was not able to pull herself up from the pit she was in.

Alone! That was what she was saying, “I am so alone.”

This person works as a crisis counselor for people who are at their lowest: people who are suicidal. I’ll tell you that if I did her job I would have a hard time feeling happy, let alone not being depressed. Can you imagine what it would be like to constantly hear people pour out their hearts and tell you that they have no more hope? Well, all this has been chipping away at her and she was just emotionally devastated.

We are in the Christmas season. Normally you would think this is a jolly and happy time, and it very well may be for most of us. But there are thousands upon thousands of people out there, maybe even people you know, who live with a great deal of pain and sorrow during the holidays.

Most are pretty good at hiding it because they don’t want to bother others. But the reality is most of us don’t even pay attention to anyone but ourselves. We really need to look up and truly see the people who are around us. It may be the cashier at the grocery store or the waiter or waitress at the restaurant we frequent. A simple hello or even a smile might be just what someone needs to know they aren’t alone.

I am beyond thankful that The Lord saw that His beloved creation was hurting and sent the most precious gift anyone could ever receive: His son, Jesus. He stepped out of heaven so that he could give us the hope we were so desperately needing. He gave us His life so we would understand that we don’t have to be alone. Jesus is the ultimate superhero! Go out and pay attention to those around you and become someone’s hero today!

Be blessed and Merry Christmas!
