The regularly scheduled Freedom town meeting was held last week and was attended by Mayor Shad Brackin and board member Terry Smith. Rolando Galindo was absent. Cindy Reed, Dawn Wares, Bonnie Greer and Stuart Page were present as well.
There were no non-scheduled guests and members quickly dove into the agenda, starting with discussion on ordinance letters sent out since the last meeting.
Conversation moved on to the current state of the town’s gas and water meters. Interest was expressed in transitioning over to digital meters, but the cost of making such a change is a concern. Brackin initiated talk about radio telemetry – a wireless data logger system designed to gather data regarding the consumption of electricity, gas and water. The data it collects is ultimately transferred to a central database to provide accurate billing information and analysis. The modules help to manage energy consumption by identifying unauthorised use of resources, leakage and waste. Walk-by or drive-by measurements are an added benefit.
Recently, grant money has been made available by the USDA to help rural communities maintain, modernize or build water and wastewater infrastructure and Clerk Cindy Reed said she has been working on writing a REAP (Rural Economic Action Plan) grant for the desired infrastructure.
Maintenance worker Stuart Page gave his report next and said bathrooms are closed for the season and have been winterized and mentioned a potential problem with some of the town’s tinhorns and standing water.
Bonnie Greer followed Page’s report with updates on some of the work she’s been doing.
There wasn’t anything to report on from the office manager or town clerk, but Terry Smith brought up an issue when asked if there was any new business to discuss. Though early, she suggested action be taken on the Christmas tree that’s displayed during the holiday season. Its location is of concern since it’s been hit by cars in the past. The group discussed options and were mindful of plug-in capabilities and potential traffic issues and agreed to put it on next meeting’s agenda.
