WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Much to the delight of a large home crowd at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center, the SWOSU Volleyball team dispatched of East Central in straight sets on Tuesday night, picking up a 3-0 victory to improve to 5-1 on the year while opening the year 1-0 in Great American Conference play.
SWOSU won the match by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-22, controlling from the outset by holding ECU to a negative hitting percentage in the opening set. The Dawgs again led from the start of the second set and pushing ahead for the 2-0 lead before being pushed by ECU in the third.
East Central scored four straight points to tie the third set at 20-20 and force SWOSU to spend their second timeout, but SWOSU responded with four straight points to push ahead to match point. After East Central battled off the first two match points, Allie Hoang found Emily Holm on the outside for a kill to wrap things up.
The Bulldogs got another strong performance from their middle hitters, who helped their team to a season-high 10 blocks while limiting East Central to three blocks.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Elizabeth McVicker, who had a team-best 13 kills and five blocks to go along with seven digs and one service ace. Sofia Gruden chipped in with nine kills and four blocks while Danusia Sipa Borgeaud had seven kills and 12 digs on the night. Kaitlyn Dillon led the Dawgs with 16 digs and Allie Hoang had 34 assists on the night to go along with four kills.
SWOSU now steps away from conference play for the weekend as they head to the LCU Chap Classic, where they will play four matches, beginning on Thursday evening with a matchup against Lubbock Christian.
