Fake news

I am really getting tired of fake news. It is getting increasingly harder to discern the truth and make intelligent decisions. Whether it is trying to decide about Question 788, who to vote for on Tuesday, all the immigration problems at the border, or just simply trying to determine if your kids are giving you some fake news, it is easy to be misled. Misleading facts lead to wrong choices, wrong beliefs and wrong decisions.

It is not that fake news is new. Fake news has always been around. Remember when fake news was only found in the tabloids at the supermarket checkouts? Fake pictures of aliens meeting the president, Bigfoot sightings, all at one place. Fake news has a new platform with technology and social media and fake news has taken advantage of it. Faith is not immune to fake news. Fake news has created all kinds of lies that confuse and mislead people away from the Truth of the Scriptures and the One who is Truth. Consider some of the fake news about the Lord today.

There is the fake news of the Creation. The Bible declares in Nehemiah 9:6, “Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.” We reject God and His Word and foolishly accept the musings of Darwin, embracing the lies of evolution. If God is not my Creator, I do not have to be accountable to Him. All of creation screams at us that there is a Creator. The Genesis account of Creation correctly aligns with the scientific observations we see today. Evolution is fake news.

There is the fake news of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The guards at the tomb were told in Matthew 28:12-13,15, “And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept … they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.” The fake news of the first century was that Jesus did not arise from the grave. Paul gives us the legal document of the truth of the resurrection of Christ in 1 Corinthians 15 where he lists over five hundred eyewitnesses of the resurrected Christ. If the fake news of Christ were true, then Jesus was just a man and a liar, BUT Jesus is risen, He is Savior, He is God!

There is the fake news of the path to Heaven. Paul warns us of this fake news in Galatians 1:6-8, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” There are so many lies on how people get to heaven today. Men readily embrace religion because they do not want to confront their sinfulness and trust Christ. Remember that Jesus said in John 14:6, “… I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Finally, there is the fake news that denies the soon return of Christ. Peter reveals the attitude of our day in 2 Peter 3:3-5, “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant …” Most today have forgotten the scores of Scriptures that remind us that this world is coming to an end of judgment by the Lord. The Bible faithfully declares in Revelation 1:7, “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.”

As we wade through all the fake news of our days, remember that their will always be liars. Rest assured that their lies will one day be uncovered. Don’t lose faith in the Lord. If there is anything certain in these last days it is that the Lord is trustworthy, “Deuteronomy 32:4, “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” And His Word is always right, Psalm 33:4, “For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.”
