Bethany Allen Named 2018 Google Cloud DII First Team Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas — Henderson State senior shortstop Bethany Allen added to her long list of career accolades on Wednesday afternoon, when she was named to the 2018 DII Softball Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team by CoSida.

Allen, who has a 4.0 GPA in Recreation and Sports Management, was one of 11 players and four infielders in the country to make the First Team. With Wednesday's honor, she becomes the first player in the 20-year history of the Reddie softball program to be named an Academic All-American. She was one of just 12 players on any of the three Academic All-American teams to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA.

A stalwart at shortstop during the last two seasons for Henderson, Allen started 85 games for the Reddies during her career and carried a .323 batting average. During her senior season in 2018, Allen garnered Second Team All-Great American Conference recognition by racking up 65 hits, 23 RBIs, 11 doubles and a .363 average at the plate.

In addition to her on-field achievements, Allen was Henderson's 2017-18 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the recipient of the 2017 Ben Hogan Award for Perseverance after overcoming stage three anaplastic oligodendroglia (brain cancer) to return to the softball field. She has received numerous awards for her academic prowess in the past two seasons, including 2018 Academic All-District honors, GAC Scholar-Athlete and All-Academic recognition, and a 2017 ADA DII Academic Achievement award.
