Rain at last

Storm clouds would appear, severe storm watches were issued, but somehow all the rain seemed to pass by Alva to the north or south. Storms would even split around Alva.

Sunday evening Alva finally received a decent rain, but it was still not enough to make up for months with nary a drop. Finally Wednesday night, the rains came and stayed long enough to record 3.11 inches of precipitation in the Mesonet rain gauge for Alva. The Mesonet station is actually located about eight miles south of Alva at the NWOSU ag farm.

This time, all the towns around Alva lost out on the precious moisture. The Mesonet shows Freedom received 0.52 inches while the May Ranch to the northwest of Alva got 0.49. Other northwest Oklahoma towns received similar amounts with Woodward at 0.70, Cherokee at 0.58, and Seiling posting 0.53. Buffalo received only 0.13 and Fairview had a paltry 0.03 inches Wednesday night.

In the past seven days, Alva had a total of 4.28 inches of rain. According to figures posted on the Mesonet site, that’s the highest amount in the state in that time.

At present, Woods County is still under a governor’s burn ban. The six other counties designated with burn bans are Beaver, Cimarron, Ellis, Harper, Texas and Woodward.
