BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Seven Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball players have been recognized on all-Great American Conference teams, the league office announced Wednesday.
Pitcher/utility Megan Goodnight earned a pair of first team selections - both as a pitcher and a utility player, while center fielder Ashton Sangster also earned a first-team nod. Infielders Bailey Bunch and Sarah Coronado were both named to the second team, while pitcher Kristen Dempsey, third baseman Paige Mendoza, and utility player Janie Knowles were all named to the honorable mention team.
In addition, Bunch was recognized as a GAC Elite Scholar Athlete, one of four student-athletes to tie for the top overall grade point average among student-athletes competing in the championship, while Knowles and Sydnie Henson were both recognized as GAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.
Goodnight was a force as a two-way player for the Golden Suns, going 14-4 with a 1.63 ERA during the regular season. She leads Division II with her nine saves and has held opponents to a .244 batting average. Meanwhile, at the plate, the junior has hit .342 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs, pacing one of the top offensive units in the Great American Conference.
Sangster leads the Golden Suns with her .359 batting average, and is a perfect 27 of 27 in stolen base attempts. The sophomore has smashed four home runs and added 39 RBIs to her total.
Bunch and Coronado have provided a solid middle infield unit for the Golden Suns, with Bunch hitting .325 on the year and Coronado hitting .331 with five homers.
Dempsey has pitched in 30 contests, going 11-6 with a 3.18 ERA and holding opponents to a .268 batting average, while Mendoza and Knowles have provided punch to the Arkansas Tech batting order, with Mendoza hitting .315 with six homers and 36 RBIs, while Knowles is hitting .329 with nine homers and 36 RBIs.
Arkansas Tech opens GAC tournament play at 1 p.m. Wednesday vs. Ouachita Baptist.
