Storm Fall to UAM

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene dropped both games in the doubleheader Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello at Feland Field 14-8, and 13-2.

The Weevils (13-3, 9-0 GAC) took all three games in the series as they leave Bethany as the only remaining team in the GAC that is undefeated in conference play. Jefferson Harris got the start in the opener for the Crimson Storm (6-10, 2-7 GAC) as he struck out three and gave up eight runs, six earned, in six innings of action. Cody Tolbert took his second loss of the year, as he allowed three runs on four hits.

Cole Wagner led the way at the plate for the Crimson Storm as the senior went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Also going 2-for-4 was Joe Toilolo and Cole Lee, as Lee scored three runs, and Toilolo had one RBI. Shelby Reese went 1-for-3 with a couple of RBI's, while Tanner Maskey also went 1-for-3. The Crimson Storm tallied 10 hits at the plate, compared to 16 for the Weevils.

Much like the game Friday, the Storm bats stayed hot as they struck first in the second inning. Joe Toilolo ripped one up the middle to score Cole Lee to give them a 1-0 lead. A few batters later, Garrett Perez walked with the bases loaded, scoring Shelby Reese to make it 2-0. Next up was Cole Wagner who slapped one down the right field line that scored Toilolo and Jake Vernon to make it a 4-0 lead for SNU. Austin Cooper then grounded out to second base, which scored Perez to give the Storm a 5-0 lead.

SNU made it 6-0 in the third inning when Shelby Reese scored Cole Lee on a sacrifice fly to center. The Weevils got on the board in the top of the fourth courtesy of a two-run home run to cut the SNU lead to 6-2.

Reese singled through the left side in the bottom of the fifth to score Lee as the Storm pushed their lead up to 7-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Escobedo homered to give SNU their largest lead of the game at 8-2.

The Weevils hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-3. But that was just the beginning for UAM in the inning. They erupted for nine runs to take their first lead of the game at 11-8.

UAM tacked on two more runs in the eighth to increase their lead to 13-8. The Weevils added one more run in the ninth to lead 14-8, and the Storm weren't able to put any pressure on them in their final at-bat.

David Gustafson got the start on the bump in the final game for Southern Nazarene, as he took his second loss of the season. He allowed nine earned runs, and struck out six in five innings of work. The Crimson Storm totaled just two hits in the ball game, and had three errors on the defensive end.

Austin Cooper and Cole Lee were the only Storm players who tallied hits, as each had one RBI. Garrett Perez and Cole Wagner both had a run scored.

The Weevils got on the board in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. It didn't take SNU long to tie it however, as Cooper singled to center field to score Perez in the bottom of the first. Lee got an RBI on the next play as he scored Wagner on a sacrifice bunt to give the Storm a 2-1 lead after one inning.

UAM came right back in the top of the second to score a run to tie things up 2-2. The Weevils took their first lead of the game in the top of the third as they put four on the board to take a 6-2 lead. Arkansas-Monticello added four more runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead.

The Weevils took their largest lead of the game in the seventh, as they pushed across three runs to make it 13-2, and the Storm weren't able to get anything else going.
