ECU Baseball Drops Two Games Against Southwestern

WEATHERFORD, OKLA. – The East Central University baseball team fell in the final two games of the Great American Conference series with Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Tigers (1-15, 0-9 GAC) lost 20-4 in game one and then 22-8 in the night cap.

ECU was led by junior Marcus Sonnier, who hit .667, with four hits a run and five RBIs for the day. Sophomore Ryan White added a .600 average, three hits and two runs.

The Tigers are scheduled to host Arkansas-Fort Smith, Tuesday, March 6 at Ken Turner Field at 2 p.m.

SWOSU 20, ECU 4 (7)

The Bulldogs (11-5, 8-1 GAC) came out ready to fight and put a single run on the board in the first, four in the second, and seven in the third for a 12-0 lead.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, sending two runs across the plate for a 12-2 score. Freshman Garrett Oldham started the inning being hit by a pitch and was sent to third when junior Josh Lincoln doubled. Senior Bryce Dimitroff then earned an RBI when he grounded out to short to score Oldham. After the second out of the inning, senior Connor Stevenson singled to center to score the final run.

Both teams held each other scoreless for the fourth and fifth innings, but SWOSU added a run in the sixth for a 13-2 advantage.

ECU added a run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the deficit back to 10 (13-3). After an out, White singled and was sent to third when Sonnier doubled. That allowed junior Tag Sparks to earn an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

However, the Bulldogs kept fighting and increased the lead to 20-3, with a seven-run seventh. ECU was able to get one run across in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough to end the nine-inning game early.

Lincoln started the inning by getting to second because of an error and was advanced to third when Dimitroff grounded out. That allowed sophomore Dakota Washington to earn an RBI with a sacrifice fly for the 20-4 final.

SWOSU 22, ECU 10

Both teams kept each other scoreless in the opening inning of game two, but the Bulldogs started the scoring with a run in the second and then added five in the third for a 6-0 advantage.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third cutting the lead to 6-1. Freshman Dillon Mansell started the inning with a single to right, was advanced second on a wild pitch and third when Lincoln grounded out to second. He was then able to score when Dimitroff grounded out.

SWOSU added two runs in the top of the fourth (8-1), but ECU came fighting back in the bottom of the inning, with four runs to cut the deficit to 8-5. Stevenson led off the inning with a home run on the first pitch.

Senior Trevor Crone and White followed with singles and were sent home when Sonnier hit a three-run home run to left.

However, the Bulldogs had a strong fifth inning scoring 10 runs to push the lead to 18-5.

ECU added three runs in the fifth (18-8) on two walks, two singles and an error.

SWOSU then added three runs in the seventh to increase the advantage to 22-8.

The Tigers started the seventh inning strong, getting two runs for a 22-10 final. Stevenson led off the inning with a single and was sent home when Crone tripled. The final run was scored by Sonnier when he grounded out.
