UAMHOOPS falls to rival SAU in Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team was taken down on the road by rival Southern Arkansas Tuesday night, 69-68.

NOTABLES

The Weevils drop to 11-6 (6-5 GAC) on the year.

SAU records its sixth straight win to improve to 10-7 (6-5 GAC) this season.

Derylton Hill recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 23 points, and 10 rebounds.

FIRST HALF

Despite falling behind 5-1 to the Muleriders to begin this contest, UAM created a 16-0 run with made shots from Keelin Jackson, and Goosby to see the Weevils up 17-5 midway through the opening half.

Arkansas-Monticello continued to hold the first half momentum, leading SAU throughout the remainder of the period, with a 36-33 advantage at the half as well.

UAM recorded a field goal percentage of 41 during the first half of play, along with forcing 12 SAU turnovers in the leading effort.

SECOND HALF

The second half in this GAC rivalry was a closely contested battle, with each program trading buckets early on, as made shots from Hill and Karim Mawuenyega saw the Weevils with a 52-46 lead with 8:32 left in the game.

A Mulerider three pointer put the home squad ahead with just over a minute remaining, and the game would come down to its' final play, a three point shot taken by Jackson that rattled in and out to see SAU claim the 69-68 victory.

The Weevils struggled from the charity stripe in this second half, shooting only 8-for-17 from the line, and 16-for-29 overall in the match-up.

Arkansas-Monticello will next take on #16 Southern Nazarene at home inside Steelman Field House on Thursday, January 25 with game-time set for 7:30 p.m.
