Storm knock off Division I Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. — For the first time in school history, Southern Nazarene knocked off an NCAA Division I opponent with a 68-60 win at Oral Roberts in an exhibition Friday night.

Micah Speight had a game-high 21 points as he was 7-for-14 from the field and hit three 3-pointers. He also had four rebounds and two steals while going 4-for-5 at the line. Noah Starkey added 10 points and five rebounds. Quaylon Newton posted a game-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points and three blocks.

The Storm held the Golden Eagles to 32.7 percent shooting from the field and just 5-for-16 from downtown. SNU fired 41.5 percent from the floor, but were just 5-for-25 from 3-point range. SNU did shot 19-for-23 from the free-throw line. ORU was just 21-for-35 at the charity stripe.

SNU trailed 15-10 midway through the first half when a Micah Speight trey ignited a 13-2 run to give the Storm a 23-17 lead with 3:47 left in the first. Southern Nazarene took its biggest lead of the half at 30-23 with 57 seconds left on a Noah Starkey bucket in the paint before taking a 30-26 lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles cut it to 30-27 right out of the gate to start the second half, but the Storm quickly pushed it to 36-27 with six straight. SNU pushed the lead to double digits at 10 three different times before an Ashton Charles3-pointer gave the Storm a 59-46 lead with seven minutes to play. That was the largest lead of the night for the Storm as they held off a late charge by ORU to pick up the win.
