On Wednesday, Nov. 22, the Woods County Senior Citizen's Center and Wheatheart Nutrition Project held their annual Thanksgiving dinner and it was a huge success. Over 80 guests attended including volunteers, donors and seniors with their families. In all, the center served over 100 meals, which included take outs and home deliveries.
The team from the Wheatheart Nutrition Project and the board of the Woods County Senior Citizens Center were happy to see so many people eating at the center, but they would love to see you more often than once or twice a year at the center. The center invites you to come and eat every day. If you can't come because you are homebound, they are happy to deliver meals to you.
The suggested donation for a meal is $2 for seniors (60+) and $6 for guests. Where in Alva can you get a meal with such wonderful dining companions for only $2? You don't need to think what you should cook and your kitchen stays clean. All you need to do is call the day before you want to come or before 10 a.m. on the day you are attending. This allows the kitchen to prepare the needed meals without having too many leftovers.
If you are interested in eating at the center or getting home delivered meals, please contact the office at the Senior Citizen Center 580-327-1822 or stop by the center at 625 Barnes in Alva.
The Senior Citizens and Wheatheart Nutrition Service are very grateful for the community as they provide support with generous donations and gifts such as money, food or their personal time. Without this support the center would not be able to serve nutritious meals to our senior citizens.
This help includes two cook aids from BJCC who are a great addition and help. On Nov. 15 the center welcomed John McGinnis as cook, and the team at the nutrition center is now complete.
In addition to being busy preparing the Thanksgiving dinner a crowd of seniors made a huge batch of homemade noodles. These fresh made-from-scratch noodles can be purchased for $5 per 1 pound bag at the senior center. This is one of the fundraisers the Woods County seniors hold during the year. The money raised provides the transportation service and stocks the salad bar at the Senior Citizen Center.
The Woods County seniors are also raising money for a new bus. The current bus has several mechanical issues and is much larger than needed. A smaller bus would help lower transportation costs.
Unfortunately, this is not the only issue the center has, as currently both of the commercial-sized refrigerators have mechanical issues. The center was able to get one going again but just barely. The center will have to replace both refrigerators at a cost of $3,500 to $4,000 per unit. The Woods County Senior Citizens and the Wheatheart Nutrition Project would greatly appreciate donations for these projects.
