RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – A hot start to the 2017-18 campaign has led to Lady Bulldog sophomore guard Tyra Askabeing awarded the inaugural GAC Player of the Week award for the new season.
Aska (Meridian, Okla.) tallied back-to-back performances of at least 20 points at the GAC/MIAA Crossover over the weekend, posting exactly 20 points in an upset win over No. 11-ranked Emporia State on Friday followed by 21 points against Missouri Southern a day later. She shot an efficient 58.6% (17-for-29) from the field in two games, helping lead SWOSU to a 2-0 start to the season. Against ESU, Aska also came away with a career high six steals on defense to help lead the upset bid over the Lady Hornets. During her freshman campaign, Aska scored 20 or more points twice in 30 games and has now tied that mark as a sophomore in the season's first two contests. Following the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season, Aska leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring at 20.5 points per game.
This is the second time Aska has picked up the weekly conference honor in her Bulldog career, with the other coming back on November 28th following a career high scoring performance of 29 points against Northeastern State.
SWOSU puts their 2-0 record on the line on Thursday evening with their Great American Conference opener against Ouachita at 5:30 pm inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center in Weatherford.
