No. 3 Midwestern State rallies to down OC in finale

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 28, 2017) – For one half, Oklahoma Christian played right with No. 3-ranked Midwestern State (Texas), but the Mustangs showed in the second half why they're among the favorites to win the NCAA Division II championship.

Midwestern State scored 35 seconds after halftime and added three more goals, completing an unbeaten season with a 4-1 win over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon in OC's season finale at the Eagle Soccer Field.

Midwestern State (16-0-2, 12-0-2 Heartland Conference) outshot OC (3-12-12, 1-11-2) by a 15-5 count and completed its fourth undefeated regular season, but not before it trailed in a game for only the second time all season.

In the 18th minute, Midwestern State goalkeeper Taylor Lampe came off his line to punch away a free kick by Matheus Mantovani, but the ball caromed straight to OC's Garrett Blume, who was on the edge of the penalty box. With Lampe out of position to defend, Blume sent a sharp header toward the goal that found the back of the net. Blume's goal, his team-high fifth of the season, put the Eagles up 1-0.

After halftime, the Mustangs quickly equalized when Carlos Flores' cross from the right side found the head of teammate Scott Doney, who recorded his 12th goal of the season.

The Eagles clung to the tie until the 75th minute, when Flores assisted on another header goal, this one by Pierre Bocquet. Midwestern State sealed the win in the 77th minute, when Bocquet assisted on a goal by Flores, and tacked on an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Sebastian Venegas scored on a blast from 30 yards out.

Lampe didn't record a save for Midwestern State, but OC goalkeeper Gary Goldsboro Jr. had four saves.

After the game, OC honored six seniors – Anthony Buchanan, Tyler Buchanan, Braydan Castrop, Clay Collier, Nijee Cooper and Cody McLemore.
