OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win at Oklahoma Christian in the regular season finale for the Hillcats. RSU now prepares for the Heartland Conference Tournament on Thursday.
RSU ended the regular season with a 13-3-2 record overall and 9-3-2 in the Heartland Conference, ranking third with 29 points. The Cats will play No. 2-seeded St. Edward's on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Dallas, Texas at league regular season champion Dallas Baptist University.
The Hillcats dominated from start to finish in today's game at OC. The navy and red needed less than two minutes to gain a 1-0 edge when freshman defender Alex Wynn scored off a corner kick from Eva Madarang. The advantage doubled to 2-0 in the 11th minute on Daisy Cardona's team-leading 11th goal of the season. Cardona knocked in a shot from 8 yards off a cross from Jordan Downing. RSU wasn't done in the first half as Janell Hernandez upped the score to 3-0 before halftime in the 40th minute with her third goal of the season. Hannah Mushisky had the assist on the tally.
In the second period, the Cats continued to control the contest with three more goals. Downing added a goal to go with her earlier assist as she dribbled into the box and beat the OC goalkeeper in the 53rd minute for a 4-0 lead. Wynn scored her second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 65th minute. Maggie Brown ended the RSU scoring with her goal in the 67th minute on a shot from 8 yards.
For the game, RSU posted a 21-11 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on target. The second half saw the Hillcats outshot the Eagles 12-4.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Sargent, the two-time Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, totaled her fourth straight shutout. She hasn't allowed a goal in 389 minutes. In today's game, Sargent posted six saves in 90 minutes for her 11th shutout this season.
