The Golbek–Shearer reunion was held at the Alva Senior Citizen Center on Saturday, Sept. 10. Saturday evening supper was at the Alva Moose Lodge for those from out of town and local ones that wanted to attend and visit early.
This reunion started back in 1954 at the Reuben and Thelma Golbek ranch south of Selmon, Oklahoma, for the celebration of Ernest and Hattie Shearer's 50th wedding anniversary. There were 16 children born to this family. Three of those sisters (Irene, Hazel and Thelma Shearer) married three Golbek brothers (Otto, Edd and Reuben), who came from a family of 12 children.
These families carried on this reunion for 25 years, then the next generation, Betty (Golbek) Riggins and Elsie (Golbek) Shipley did it for another 25 years. Betty and her family have continued it, saying each year this is the last year, hoping a younger generation will take over, maybe, someday.
Those married longest were Marvin and Elsie Shipley at 66 years. Oldest member was John McRee of Yukon, Oklahoma, at 92 years. Youngest was Shala Brown of Alva at 3 months. Traveling the longest distance were Larry and Tina Wallace from Santa Fe, Texas, with a seven-hour drive.
