Volleyball defeated in conference opener

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State volleyball team lost to Oklahoma Baptist in their first Great American Conference match of the season, 3-1 (19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 19-25).

The Rangers (5-5, 0-1 GAC) were outmatched in the kill category 59-to-39 in the match and also got blocked 10 separate times by the Bison.

Northwestern picked up a key victory in the fourth set of the match after dropping the first two sets by a comfortable margin for the Bison. The Rangers answered the first two tough sets by going up 13-7 to start the third set and closed out the set thanks to two straight kills from Hannah Williams.

The fourth set went all the way down to the wire as an early 7-3 lead from the Bison (4-5, 1-0 GAC) was quickly erased by five straight points by the Rangers following alternating points from each team to bring the score to 9-8. Oklahoma Baptist surged ahead yet again 17-12 a short time later, but the battling Rangers continued to fight and worked their way back into the game by going on a 7-3 run to bring the score to 20-19.

The Bison then rallied and finished off the match with five straight points to defeat the Black-and-Red.

Redshirt sophomore Kiauna Clark scored 15.5 points for the Rangers with 12 kills and three block assists. Clark posted a team high .311 hitting percentage for the match and also led the team with 14 digs in the contest. Junior Hannah Williams matched Clark with 15 kills.

Up Next

The Rangers will head to Bethany, Okla. to compete in the MIAA-GAC Crossover hosted by Southern Nazarene with four matches scheduled over the weekend. Matches are set for 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
