• Kiowa plans traditional 78th Annual Labor Day Weekend
Wow, reviewing the Kiowa, Kansas, Labor Day Celebration agenda, it looks like a jam-packed weekend of fun events. If you're from out of town come and rest from your labors – for Kiowa residents helping with it all, there doesn't look like much time to relax.
Kiowa's Chamber of Commerce plans their 78th Annual Labor Day Celebration, probably known best for the free ham and bean feed at noon in Progress Park on Monday.
Events Begin Saturday Morning
The weekend kicks off Saturday morning with a flea market on Main Street and garage sales all around town.
The historical society invites you to the historical museum along Seventh Street where they'll have a table of unique items you might like to buy. They'll be set up on the south side of the museum. They have a gun raffle and you can pre-order cookbooks. You can tour this museum and the school museums all day.
At 9 a.m., load up on a trailer at the Historical Museum to take a tour of Kiowa's Historical Homes.
Also at 9 a.m. is the always crazy-fun Duck Soup Invitational Softball Tournament.
Finish your evening with friends listening to the oldies at a street dance with a D.J. and The Quake in the Kiowa Auto Parts parking lot Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m.
Sunday Activities
Head to shady Progress Park where there's a car show starting in the morning through mid-afternoon. Sand volleyball starts at 11 a.m.
The All-School Kiowa High School Reunion is Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the community building. There's entertainment at the banquet. If you want to sing with the group headed by Cathy Cox, go to the Congregational Church Wednesday night at 6:30 to practice.
Labor Day 5K Run and Fun Monday
The 33rd Annual 5K Race kicks off the day Monday. The fun run and 5K race start about 8 a.m. Be at the Kiowa Community Building well before 8 a.m. to register for the race if you haven't already.
5K pre-registration ends today, Wednesday, at noon. You can go to the First State Bank in Kiowa to register or call 620-825-4147.
Progress Park activities begin in the morning. The historical society serves coffee and homemade rolls starting at 8 a.m. You'll see a variety of vendors around the south edge of the park throughout the day.
Kids will love playing on the free inflatables from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Walk in an old-fashioned cake walk starting at 11 a.m. The free ham and bean feed starts at noon. “The Beaners” are up before the sun rises getting the huge black cauldrons of ham and beans cooking. During the lunch hour enjoy musical entertainment on stage.
There's bingo and games galore in the park. Churches have a variety of yummy food including homemade pie, homemade ice cream, brauts, sloppy joes, hot dogs, homemade tacos and the Barber County Shrine's roasted corn.
Stay around until 4 p.m. to watch another hilarious game of Family Feud and enjoy gospel singing all on the park stage.
Then go rest from your labors.
