What started as a motorcycle fun run to raise money to buy toys for children at Christmas turned into a sad time for two of the riders.
The group started in Alva on Saturday morning. They gathered at Radio Shack in Alva as Gary Brown is part of the group. Alva Review Courier Publisher Lynn Martin took their picture before they left. The plan was to return to the Moose Lodge in Alva that evening.
According to the Barber County, Kansas, sheriff's report, the accident involved two men. They are Frank Lambert of Enid who was driving a 2001 Honda GL8. The sheriff's report said Lambert's bike collided with Curtis Meade of Kingfisher who was driving a 2005 Honda GL8. The location was not in the report, but it was reportedly on or near the Isabel Road.
The sheriff's report says only there was over $1,000 damage and unknown injuries. The accident was investigated by Deputy Woods and Sheriff Small. The Isabel Fire Department and Medicine Lodge Ambulance also responded.
The Medicine Lodge Ambulance transported the patient from Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital to St. Francis in Wichita.
The Newsgram called the Barber County Sheriff's Office Monday and found that Sheriff Small was out-of-town for a training and Deputy Woods was not scheduled to work Monday.
A call to the sheriff's office Tuesday found those officers still unavailable. Speaking to Barber County Undersheriff Dusty Brewer, he said the accident is still under investigation and he could provide no further details beyond what was in the sheriff's report for the newspapers.
Karol Parsons with the Northwest Riders who held the toy fun run (that raises money for toys at Christmas) was in the newspaper office Tuesday. She said that Lambert is 88 and Meade is 63. She said that Lambert was mediflighted to Wichita. Meade was taken by ambulance to Wichita. She said Lambert was still in ICU in Wichita, but Meade had a broken collarbone and has returned home.
