Prior to the Barber County Fair that is July 27-30, several fair judging events were held. These included a fashion revue, perishable foods contest and a dog show.
On July 20, the fashion revue was judged. Barber County 4-H members styled 39 outfits for the judge. Of those outfits, seven were constructed by the members. The classes included formals, dress outfits, school clothes and even a bathrobe. The members then modeled these outfits for the public on Friday, July 21. The backdrop was vintage doors and windows. New this year, this fashion show was streamed live on the K-State Research & Extension – Barber County Facebook page. You can still view the videos on this page. Champions were announced at the end.
In the category of items the members made, Bree Bodemann, Cloverleaf 4-H Club, was champion junior; Briar Bodemann, Cloverleaf 4-H Club, won intermediate champion; and Kaitlyn Myers, Sunny Lakers 4-H Club, was reserve dhampion. Olivia Woods won senior champion and Annamarie Siegrist was reserve champion, both of the Sunny Lakers 4-H Club.
For clothes purchased by members, in the Boy's Division, Slater Blick, Cloverleaf 4-H Club, was champion and Callan Smith, Sunflower 4-H Club, was reserve champion. The girls were divided into three age groups. Champion junior was Madisyn Day, Stampede 4-H Club, and Bree Bodemann was reserve champion. Camryn Smith was champion intermediate and Rhyann Marshall was reserve champion, both of the Sunflower 4-H Club. In the senior age group, Sierra Cargill, Gyp Hill Pioneers 4-H Club, was champion and Corbin Smith, Sunflower 4-H Club, was reserve champion.
The perishable foods contest was held on Friday, July 21. The entries are in two divisions: hot and cold. The hot foods must be 140 degrees or hotter and the cold foods must be 40 degrees or colder. These are foods that cannot be exhibited at the fair because we do not have facilities to keep them hot or cold until they are judged. This is a contest that not every county has. We were able to sample biscuits and gravy, corn casserole, buffalo chicken dip, peach torte, and icebox desert, just to name a few. This day also includes a table setting contest. The winners were announced at the fashion show.
In the hot food division, Slater Blick won champion with loaded pierogis, and Carson Cargill, Gyp Hill Pioneers, won reserve champion with beef empanadas. In the cold food division, Madie Marshall, Sunflower 4-H Club, won champion with double chocolate ganache and raspberry cheesecake and Sierra Cargill won reserve champion with a peach torte. In the table setting class, Sierra Cargill won champion and Carson Cargill won reserve champion.
On Saturday July 22, a dog show was held in Hardtner that was for Pratt and Barber County 4-H members and open class participants. Lee Roland, Gyp Hill Pioneers 4-H Club, was the only Barber County 4-H member. He earned white ribbons in showmanship, agility and obedience with his dog Mattie. Complete fair results will be shared after the fair finishes on July 30. Or better yet, come on out to the fair in Hardtner and see the exhibits and livestock shows for yourself.
