Two 4th of July collisions

Alva police worked two minor accidents on Tuesday, July 4. The first occurred at 11:11 a.m. on Church Street west of First Street. Liberty Jennae Bird, 16, of Alva was backing a 2005 Toyota to the south from a private drive. Bird was looking at another vehicle driving on the roadway and backed into a parked vehicle on the other side of the street. The parked vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet, is owned by Kevin Gulley of Leaf River, Illinois. Patrolman Kris Franta investigated.

The second July 4 collision happened on Oklahoma Boulevard at Third Street at 10:40 p.m. Darian Leon Smith, 17, of Alva was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile eastbound in the inside lane. Sandra K. Shubert, 82, of Alva was also eastbound in a 2003 Lexus S43. Schubert was in the outside lane. Smith told the police he attempted to make a right turn from the inside lane onto Third, turning in front of Schubert. He told the officer he was not paying attention.
