The electrical system at Alva High School (AHS) has been off for several days as workers replace the large power transformers. For the last month, the building has experienced more frequent power outages.
When the high school was constructed 60 years ago, it was legal to house the transformers within the building. They were installed in a room right behind the main downstairs office. Under current codes, such an installation would not be approved and would be considered dangerous.
A new concrete pad has been poured, along with a ditch for an underground cable, and new transformers have been set in place on the south side of the administrative parking lot. OGE is bearing much of the expense for the change out. Alva High has to pay for the copper wire from the new transformer to the breaker boxes in the old transformer room.
Superintendent Steve Parkhurst said AHS may be totally without power for a day or so next week as work is completed.
