A couple told the Alfalfa County sheriff and deputy that the husband stabbed himself in the shoulder. But officers were skeptical. Further questioning brought out a different story. Now the pair faces court charges.
According to court records, Sheriff Rick Wallace and Deputy Loren Nusser responded to a domestic disturbance in Carmen about 11:20 p.m. on April 20. Cherokee Assistant Police Chief Ryan McNeil (who is also a reserve deputy) was also present.
A neighbor contacted law enforcement to report screaming and crying from the residence. The neighbor had approached the house and heard Noe Loredo talking about needing to get things cleaned up before the police arrived.
The officers tried several times to get the residents to answer the door, but there was no response. Based on concern for the safety of the occupants, Sheriff Wallace gave permission to make forced entry. Inside they found Noe Loredo and his wife, Angela Loredo, in one bedroom and their two children, ages 6 and 8, in another. All were in their beds.
The children were kept in the bedroom to keep them calm. Both said they had heard their mom and dad fighting.
The parents were brought into the living room for questioning. They said there had been a fight but it did not get physical. However, the officers found smeared blood on the living room floor, bloody rags in the bathroom tub, and a knife with a bloody tip in the kitchen. It appeared an attempt had been made to clean all these items.
Noe had a large bandage covering his right shoulder. When asked what happened, he said he had stabbed himself to prove his love to Angela. The two were then questioned separately and continued to deny the fight was physical. Angela said she didn’t know about Noe being stabbed.
Sheriff Wallace asked Noe if he had hit Angela. He said he only hit her once and had slapped her. Asked to demonstrate how he stabbed himself, Noe used his right hand to reach across his chest and “stab” his left shoulder. Due to the depth of Noe’s chest he was unable to fully reach the place he had been stabbed. He said Angela had bandaged it.
When Angela was asked about bandaging Noe’s shoulder, she changed her story. She said Noe stabbed himself; she cleaned him up and bandaged it. When officers suggested she stabbed Noe, she said she had not. However, she said he had been drunk and had been hitting her. She said the bruises all over her body were covered with her clothing and refused to show them.
Sheriff Wallace contacted DHS and was informed that since the parents were being separated, they would do a home check the following morning.
EMS arrived. After examining Noe, they reported the stab wound appeared to match the knife and was not at an angle. They took Noe to Share Medical Center in Alva. The doctor found the stab wound was 2.3 cm, just short of an inch long, and 2.64 cm (one inch) deep. Noe said he did not wish to harm himself so he was not admitted. His mother-in-law who lives in Alva agreed to let him spend the night at her home.
The next day about 4:27 p.m. Deputy Nusser received word that Noe and Angela Loredo were back together and packing to go to Texas. He had told them to contact him the next day for a follow-up interview.
Nusser went to Carmen where he found the couple and their children in the house packing for a trip. He interviewed Angela first and then Noe. During questioning, Noe stated that Angela had stabbed him. They both told the same story up to a point. When she learned what Noe had said, Angela then changed her story.
The two agreed that they were supposed to go to a concert in Enid but they could not find a babysitter and did not have enough gas money to get there. They started arguing about finances and faithfulness.
Angela went to the store and bought a four-pack of beer then they went to a friend’s house.
On the way back to their house, they began arguing. Noe said he got out of the car so they were not fighting in front of the kids, and Angela left him on the side of the road. Angela drove home where she cooked supper for the kids and put them to bed. She went outside to smoke and found Noe sitting on the porch to finish his beer. They started to fight again.
Angela told Noe he should sleep in the car, but she had hidden the keys so he could not. Noe said Angela tried to lock him out, but he forced his way inside the house and past her. He said he might have hit her with the door when he shoved it open. Noe said he took a shower, got a sheet and laid it out on the couch. Angela continued to yell at him and tell him to get out of the house. He said he told her it was his house too, and she punched him in the back. He said he threw a couch cushion at her.
He said she went into the kitchen and brought a knife back. She was still yelling and stabbed him in the right shoulder. He said he didn’t believe she had meant to stab him. Noe said he slapped her in the face with his open hand and began yelling in pain. The yelling woke up the kids.
Noe said when Angela saw what she had done, she began to panic. She cleaned and bandaged the wound, and then they cleaned up the blood. He said they sent the kids back to bed when they heard the sheriff knocking on the door. When Nusser asked Noe why he had lied, he said he was afraid to go to jail.
DHS was contacted. After they did their interviews, they determined the children would be removed from the home.
