MANHATTAN, Kan. – Southeastern returned to action for the first time in the spring at the Kansas State Rodeo with the women's team picking up a fifth place finish, while the men turned in a ninth place outing.
The women were once again bolstered by their goat tying performance where a trio of riders placed in the top 10.
That group was led by Shelby Whiting who finished third in the opening round with a 6.4 and followed up with a second 6.4 to finish third in the short go which lifted her to a second place finish in the average.
Shania Johnston was right behind with a 6.8 in the first round to split 4th/5th, but was hit with some short go difficulties and clocked an 8.2 to finish 6th in the round and sixth in the average.
ShiAnn Henderson was seventh in the opening round after turning in a 7.1 on her first run and also faced some challenges in the short go and was saddled with a 10.8 which put her in seventh in the average.
Whiting holds a 100 point lead in the region in the event over teammate Kylee Bennett, while Henderson is in fourth after the first event of the spring and Johnston is in a tie for 13th.
Kasidy Rasberry led a pair of short go qualifiers in the breakaway roping, stopping the clock with a 2.9 to split 4th/5th in the first round before receiving a no time in the finals, but still placed sixth in the average.
Johston was the only woman to reach the short go in two events for the Savage Storm, clocking a 3.3 in the long go to split 9th/10th/11th, but took a no time in the finals and was out of the competition.
Rasberry has moved into third in the region in the breakaway, while Cheyenne Epps and Whiting are not far behind in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Cierra Chapman represented the team in the barrel racing event, turning in 12.41 run to win the long go by two-tenths of a second, but hit a barrel in the short go and took a penalty which pushed her back to seventh for the weekend.
Chapman is currently fifth in the region in barrel racing, just 20 points behind third place.
The men's team struggled to find traction on the weekend, with Denver Berry turning in the team's best solo outing in the steer wrestling with a time of 5.4 on his first steer before turning in a 7.7 in the finals to finish fifth in the round and fifth in the average.
Berry is still in the hunt regionally in fifth, just 35 points behind third place.
In the team roping it was Brody Braden teaming with Oklahoma Panhandle State's Randi Buchanan to post an 8.6 in the first round and finish seventh before coming back in the short go with a 22.0 and ended up fifth in the average.
Braden maintained his second place standing in the team roping event.
Tyler Miles rounded out the Storm riders who reached the finals after posting a 55 on his first horse in the saddle bronc competition which was good for sixth. He followed up with a 45 but was offered a re-ride which he took, but was unfortunately bucked on that ride and ended up sixth in the average.
Miles improves his standing regionally in the event and is currently in seventh.
