ARKADELPHIA, ARK. – The East Central University men's basketball team got back on track, earning a 76-66 win at Henderson State in Great American Conference road action.
The Tigers (14-6, 11-4 GAC) were paced by senior Braxton Reeves, who tallied 26 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman Camron Talley added 19 points, four board, three assists and two steals.
The Reddies (13-8, 8-7 GAC) jumped out to an earn 0-6 advantage in the opening 1:15. HSU then held on to a one to three point advantage through the first eight minutes of the game. That is when ECU stepped up their game and went on a 7-0 run to gain a 20-15 lead over the next three minutes.
The rest of the half saw the Tigers holding onto the lead, and using a 6-0 run in the final 30 seconds to garner a 38-28 lead at the break.
The Reddies found a second gear to start the second half, using a 12-0 run in the first four minutes to regain the lead (38-40). The teams then traded shots over the next six minutes to see HSU holding a one-point lead (48-47).
The Tigers then started a 10-0 run over the next 2:30 to regain the lead for good (56-48). However, the Reddies never quit fighting and cut the deficit to two (61-59), with 3:25 left to play. ECU countered with a 9-0 run of its own over the next minute to push the lead out to double-digits (70-59).
The teams traded points in the final two minutes of the game, with the Tigers holding on for the 76-66 victory.
ECU was able to earn the win because of three-point shooting and by taking advantage of their trips to the charity stripe. The Tigers hit three more (10-7) triples and went 22-of-24 from the free-throw line, while holding HSU to a 13-of-19 mark.
ECU will now get ready for a home game, Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist at the Kerr Activities Center.
