CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State baseball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning to roll to an 11-0 victory over Bacone College on Wednesday (Feb. 1) in the season opener at the Diamond Sports Complex.
Eight of the 11 runs came in a hot-hitting fourth inning. The navy and red totaled six hits with four of them producing runs in the inning.
In his second at bat in an RSU uniform, Bradley Degnan hit a solo shot to right field for a 1-0 edge to start the fourth inning. After the leadoff homer, the Cats loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and a walk. Garrett Hall doubled the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to center. Two more runs were added on a Sam Davison single through the infield to make it 4-0. Newcomer Matt Seubert kept the Hillcats going with a two-RBI single to up the advantage to 6-0. The final two runs of the inning came via walks with the bases loaded, increasing the margin to 8-0.
RSU added two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth for the 11-0 win.
Tim Luce, a transfer from NEO A&M, made his first start for the navy and red. The junior southpaw went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and allowed only two hits to get the season-opening victory. Brock Knoten and Rusty Huber combined to pitch the final 3.0 innings and didn't allow a single hit, totaling three strikeouts.
Eight Hillcats finished with hits, including multi-hit games from Seubert, Davison and Ismael Orozco. Seubert led the game with three RBI, and Sam Davison totaled two RBI.
The Hillcats (1-0) are right back in action tomorrow (Feb. 2) at 2 p.m. in a single nine-inning contest against Randall University at the Diamond Sports Complex. It's the second of three straight days of baseball for RSU as the Cats and Randall play a doubleheader on Friday (Feb. 3) at 12 p.m. Coverage will be available for all three games on the Hillcat Network at http://www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
