Rialto Theatre named business of the year

The Rialto Theatre in downtown Alva has entertained generations of local citizens. The iconic multi-story building located on the north side of the square was built in 1948 by Homer Jones.

Over the years it has undergone many changes. In 1952 the screen was widened to show the new Cinemascope movies. The advent of 3D movies required significant upgrades. A concession stand was added in 1958 and the Silver Lounge, a restaurant, was built in the basement. In 1983 the theater was converted for twin screens. With the advent of videotapes, the theater opened a video store. There were upgrades to show the new digital formats.

Homer's son Johnny and his wife Donna started running the theater and the Stadium Drive-In in the 1970s. Johnny spoke briefly about his memories over the years. He said the drive-in was closed after the advent. He mentioned the Rialto building cost $380,000 when it was built. The Rialto is known for being open every day, holidays included, except for Christmas Eve. He said his son Jesse cooperated with the schedule by being born on Dec. 24.

Johnny's son Jesse now operates the theater, having taken over "in 2013 or maybe 2012," according to Johnny.
